Badfish, Living In The (Sub)Lime Light
I almost went to see these guys last year, but the venue was too damn far away for me to drive out to see a tribute band, even though I’m a huge fan of Sublime. However generic you may think Sublime is, with the reggae overtones mixed with ska, punk, and hard rock, you have to admit that it’s cool and fun music.
A friend of mine introduced me to Sublime in the late 90’s. He liked the song Santeria, but hated the rest of the CD (Self Titled album, Gasoline Alley, whatever you want to call it) and gave it to me. To this day he still hates the cd and I still like it. from there I bought Second Hand Smoke, 40 oz To Freedom and Robin The Hood. I like Bradley Nowell’s voice, the reggae bits and pieces (even though I’m not a Reggae fan) and I’ve liked some old school punk in the past. Not to mention I just like the music all together. Unfortunately as a Rock and Metal fan, too many times are frat boys associated with Sublime and most of them have not listened to anything more than their self titled debut for the obvious singles.
So it’s no surprise that a tribute band to such a successful band would be successful themselves. But I don’t think they ever knew just how successful they would be. How many tribute bands can say that they wrangled $1.4 million in tour receipts? This one did last year. I suppose it’s easy when a band that was just barely breaking on to the mainstream rock scene had an unfortunate demise with the death of their singer/guitar player. Sublime was about to explode in to popularity when Bradley Nowell Overdosed on heroine, an addiction he had struggled with for a long time.
So now if you want to see Sublime and enjoy their music live, the best you’re going to get is Badfish. And from what I hear, It’s a great show. You can check out their tour schedule below.
