Daily Dose 7/18 Charlie Don’t Surf…But He Sings

July 18, 2008 by Scott

In the mid 90’s and around the time Guns N’ Roses Spaghetti Incident came out there was a huge controversial t-shirt on the market with the face of Charles Manson on the front and the infamous line from the movie Apocalypse Now! “Charlie Don’t Surf”. It was a big thing among surfers, rebellious teenagers, and rock and metal fans. I’ll admit…I wanted one back then. Why? Because it seemed cool at the time. I was a God hating metalhead and Charles Manson was an acclaimed Satanist. It quickly faded away for me and I never got the t-shirt. My parents would have killed me. I’ve seen various trials and videos over the years of Charles Manson and that is one crazy dude. When I say crazy I mean like totally insane. And for the record, I am not a fan of Charles Manson. So don’t try to turn this in that direction.

Some don’t know this about The Spaghetti Incident but there is a hidden track at the end. It’s a cover of a Charles Manson song called “Look At Your Game, Girl”. It’s actually a nice sounding song that Charles Manson released on an album called: “Lie: The Love And Terror Cult” That he released to fund his defense (a lot good that did). Axl Rose decided to use it without much support from his band-mates and very few of them play on the track. What? You screw hundreds of groupies, get drunk every night, shoot junk up your veins but you’re too good to play a Charles Manson cover? C’mon, that’s a little self-righteous if you ask me.

Anyway, it’s a cool sounding tune, even though it was written by such an insane soul. Check it out below.

Daily Dose 7/16 Guns N Roses Cover The Misfits “Attitude”

July 16, 2008 by Scott

The Mifits have been one of my favorite bands since the mid 90’s when a friend of mine introduced me to them. I didn’t really get into them until I saw them live with Michael Graves singing in 1996 and then from there it snow-balled into almost an obsession. Buying up anything and everything I could find that had to do with The Misfits. Personally I like the old Misfits, but Graves did a good job on American Psycho and this facade that Jerry Only is putting on these days falls short.

When Guns N Roses came out with the Spaghetti Incident I didn’t buy it. There wasn’t a lot on the album that appealed to me at the time but after I got into The Misfits and other old school punk music I came across The Spaghetti Incident in a used record store and scooped it up. To me the Guns N Roses cover of the song sounds too clean to me and I don’t really care for it. No one can quite sing and play this song like Glenn Danzig and The Misfits. Check out the original below and then listen to Guns N Roses Cover. I like the sheer rawness of The Misfits original. While Duff does a credible job, it just doesn’t do it for me.

Daily Dose Gun’s N Roses - Estranged

July 15, 2008 by Scott

Guns N Roses Estranged is probably one of the most under-rated songs on Use Your Illusion 2. Of all the great songs on Use Your Illusion 2 this is probably my favorite and it’s really hard to choose because of the number of amazing songs on this album. It’s a shame that this was their last great release before disbanding. The Spaghetti Incident while pretty cool in it’s own right, was nothing more than a bunch of studio cover songs and did not ever meat the expectations of G N’ R fans.

Now let me bore you with a story about Use Your Illusion 2 and me. I had a neighbor and a friend who was much younger than I was and I wasn’t the best influence on any of the younger kids in my neighborhood to include my cousins that would come up every now and then. I was probably 15 when this came out and the younger friend I speak of was maybe 9, I think. His parents are friends of the family and we kind of grew up together even though there was a 6-year age difference. Anyway, Guns N Roses was the big thing and I had Use Your Illusion 2 and he wanted a copy. Not thinking about it, I made him a copy on a blank tape and gave it to him not thinking about the “explicit lyrics”, and knowing that he had heard worse from his parents and from movies etc. So a few days later his mother comes to my house and speaks to my mom and I have to hear about how his father went to his room and overheard him singing along to Get In The Ring. Needless to say, I was in trouble. It wasn’t the first time I had been in trouble for providing this kid with either information that I shouldn’t have, like where babies come from, or with music that he should not have been listening to. I was a bad influence on a couple of kids around the neighborhood. To this day there are things I feel guilty about and things I regret, but who doesn’t have guilt and regrets. Oh well. Life goes on, live and learn and try to teach your children not to be like you, I guess. Enjoy the video.

Daily Dose 7/14 Guns N’ Roses - Knockin On Heavens Door

July 14, 2008 by Scott

Bob Dylan is and was just one of those amazing song writers that wrote so many songs that have been covered by amazing musicians over the years. While Dylan’s singing left quite a bit to be desired, the music itself never fell short and his singing style always made him a unique musician. Not to mention the fact that Dylan never cared what anyone thought about his views or opinions and wrote, played and spoke up on the issues at hand as he still does today.

But wait.  Your saying “I thought this is supposed to be about Guns N Roses?” It is, but without Bob Dylan bands like Guns N Rosesmay have never existed. Below you will find links to guitar Tab (Chords only) for Knockin On Heavens Door, both Dylan version and Guns N Roses Version. You will notice that it is a bit different in spots but both are about the same. Axl Rose adds his own style with the singing and the timing from the original is a little different as well. Slash does an amazing job as usual with the guitar work and overall this is just a great cover of a timeless Bob Dylan classic.

A Week Of Guns N’ Roses Daily Doses

July 14, 2008 by Scott

gnrlogo.jpgSo Guns N’ Roses is in the news a lot lately and I decided since I stopped covering them at MetalMartyr.com I should really utilize The Rock Dose for any G n R Related news and Daily Doses. After all, I’ve always considered Guns N Roses to be more of a hard rock and not Metal band. Either way this week should be fun with a Daily Dose of Something Gn’R all week long. As I said last night. It’s not always going to be Quotes, Video Lyrics format A daily dose may include but is not limited to a video, lyrics, quote (If it is good enough) links to the bands guitar tab, classic moments for the band, a short history of the band etc.. I need to mix it up a bit and not just focus on a basic daily routine for my Daily Doses, otherwise it get’s a bit boring.

A Daily Dose Guns N’ Roses comming up.

Daily Dose 7/11 Aerosmith - Janie’s Got A Gun

July 11, 2008 by Scott

“She had to take him down easy
And put a bullet in his brain
She said cause nobody believes me
The man was such a sleeze
He aint never gonna be the same”

Aerosmith - Janie’s Got A Gun~

Closing out the week of Aerosmith Daily Doses with Janie’s Got A Gun. Great song, great video. Now a few words…there is absolutely no denying that Aerosmith know how to put on a great show. With one of the biggest mouths and widest ranges of vocals Steven Tyler has it all. One of the greatest front-men in rock and roll backed up by such a cohesive and talented band, there is nothing anyone can really say to discredit a band that has been going strong for over 35 years. There are only a handful of bands still around that can fit into that bracket. The band has seen their ups and downs, ins and outs of rehab but have still held strong throughout the years and still never sold less than gold records even in the digital age of today. Although the band has always had a pop-driven sound to them, these days it’s more evident but I still can’t find a negative thing to say about Aerosmith. How much longer can we expect Aerosmith to keep on doing what they do? Who honestly knows but Aerosmith. No matter where they go or when they stop we will always have everything they have left in their wake of their rock n roll legacy. Lyrics after the fold… Read more

Daily Dose 7/10 Aersomith - Big Ten Inch Record

July 10, 2008 by Scott

“Got me the strangest woman
Believe it, this chicks no sinch
When I wanna get her goin
Then I whip out my big ten inch”

Aerosmith -Big Ten Inch~

Big Ten Inch what?? You’ll have to listen to the song or read the lyrics to find out…but chances are if your not an Aerosmith fan or have never heard the song before, your guess is probably not correct. Another older classic Aerosmith hit. The blues are obviously an influence of the band, and why wouldn’t the blues be an influence. The blues pretty much influence every rock song in history and if you think I’m wrong then you need to check the history of rock and roll. Lyrics after the fold.

Daily Dose 7/8 Aerosmith - Dream On

July 8, 2008 by Scott

“I know what nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know its everybodys sin
You got to lose to know how to win”

Aerosmith - Dream On~

It doesn’t get much more classic Aerosmith than this. The music has a deep sound to it as do the lyrics have a deep message. “Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay” and “You got to lose to know how to win”. Those are two statements to live by. I’m not the first to say this and I won’t be the last. Nothing is handed to you in life without a price. One way or another you have to pay for the spoils of life and work hard to achieve your dreams through perseverance and pain…Dream big, Dream on! Lyrics after the fold. Read more
