Woodstock 1969, A Part Of American History
March 11, 2009 by Scott
The year was 1969. America was in conflict in Viet Nam, the African-American civil rights movement was “over” according to our history books and a sexual revolution was still taking place. Musicians were writing music not to make money and records, but to make a statement…well, some of them were anyway. They were writing songs of inspiration, political disgust, and love and equality for human kind. It was an era that will be forever imprinted in the history of America.
When most people think of Woodstock ‘69 and that time of revolution, they only think of drugged up hippies. Those drugged up (and the not so drugged up hippies) had an outlook on life of peace and love. No war, religion, possessions and an equality for all mankind. Sadly it was a pipe dream. I say that because no matter where we go as a country, no matter what steps we take, there will always be those problems.
Scott Weiland Clean And Sober?
March 6, 2009 by Scott
For a long time I have had a love/hate relationship with Scott Weiland. Not like a real, personal relationship but like as a fan and music lover. When the Stone Temple Pilots first became big on the radio back in the early 90’s I was kind of digging their sound. It wasn’t the typical grunge or glam rock sound that was plaguing the airwaves during that time. It was a breath of fresh air. I liked them, but never enough to buy their album, Core. I was in a phase at that moment where I would mainly listen to metal and nothing else.
The following years they exploded and started getting huge. More songs started playing on the radio, everyone was singing their songs and suddenly the buzz that they had with me wore off really quick. Scott Weiland started getting in to trouble with heroin and his stage presence, even though it had a lot of showmanship, was a bit overboard in my opinion.

Check out this screen-shot of Robert Plant’s picture next to a picture of King Theoden from The Lord Of The Rings. I thought it was pretty funny. You can see more people that look just like other people and things at Totallylookslike.com. You can view this one HERE.

2009…Another Year For Crappy Reunions
February 12, 2009 by Scott
When everything else you try fails and you don’t want to get a real job…just reunite with your defunct band. It’s sure to be a hit no matter what myself or anyone else says. No matter how much hate you see on the internet, it’s your best bet. There are still fans out there that will kiss the ground you walk on and groupies that will do perverse things to roadies to get back stage at your shows.
Classic Riffs or Classic Rip-Offs?
February 5, 2009 by Scott
Plagiarism in music has been in the spot-light since the beginning of recording music. Everyone wants their due and doesn’t want anyone else to rip them off and/or get credit for their work. As much as we’d all love to believe that our guitar heroes and favorite bands are all original, the truth is a lot of copy-cat and riff theft has been going on since the invention of the guitar…or any musical instrument for that matter.
How many acoustic songs could be dubbed as rip-offs? There are only so many chords and notes and you can only put them in to so many different combinations. Before the marketing of music people used to like to play because they were artists and played for the love of it. Then one day someone had the grand idea to record that music and sell it to people. A lot of people still make music and play because of the love for it…but they still want their entitlements. The blues changed a lot of things. It progressed in to a heavier music that has even evolved into today’s various heavy metal genres. Again, there are only so many notes and variations that you can play. There has been a long running series on Youtube called Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal, where they show you songs that sound similar to other songs. Is it intentional? I don’t think so in most cases. I think it’s more of a coincidence.
Kurt Cobain Journals
January 26, 2009 by Scott
Remember when you were in school and you used to write things down in a notebook but would often rip out the pages in fear that someone might find this notebook and judge you? You might have written songs or letters to someone but it wouldn’t make it to them? Doodles and drawings, random words and stupidness? Remember that? Imagine if you didn’t tear them out and just kept saving them as life went on, sort of like a journal. Kurt Cobain kept dozens of notebooks with this kind of stuff in it.
Nickelback’s Song Structure Is Pretty Much All The Same
December 22, 2008 by Scott
Nickelback’s song structure is almost all the same. Whether it be for on of their faster songs of one of their slower song. I was in the car the other day and a song was playing on the radio. When it was over the d.j. says that it was Theory Of A Dead Man or someone, honestly I can’t remember. I said to my wife, “I thought that was Nickelback” and she did too. Bands and labels see the popularity in Nickelback and if you sound remotely like them, chances are you might get signed. They’re the Pearl Jam of the 2k’s.
Dan, who also helps me write for Censored Metal now, sent me a link to check out this flash player. It’s two Nickelback songs being played at the same time through two different speakers. Give it a listen. The song structure is written almost identical. Of course if we pick on Nickelback for this then we have to point out every great AC/DC song that sound similar to the last one.

Seether’s Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces Doesn’t Get Enough Credit
December 17, 2008 by Scott
Seether: Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces is an album that I bought earlier this year when I took over The Rock Dose. I’ve only listened to it a few times but I was writing a few things on Metal Martyr this morning while listening to Samhain, an old favorite of mine. After Samhain and breezing through a few other “S” bands like Scar Symmetry, Scorn and The Scorpions, Seether came on and I just let it play from the beginning instead of skipping to the “hits”.
Douche Bags Unite: Ted Nugent On Dennis Miller Show Tonight
Today, Dennis Miller played host to Ted Nugent on his show. Of course Ted was there to be the douche bag that he is and promote is book and spout off about how much of a patriot he is, about shooting and eating animals and about shooting Mexicans crossing in to U.S. borders. The show aired at 11:20 and I didn’t bother to listen. Seriously, do we need to hear anything more from Ted Nugent?
Upon reading a comment from a reader yesterday (Thanks), informing me that Ted dodged the draft during the Viet-Nam war, I looked in to it to find out what he really did. It is said that he stopped performing any personal hygiene weeks before attending his draft physical and even stopped using the bathroom and urinated and defecated in his pants. He claims that this statement was made up for an interview in High Times Magazine. Who the hell makes up draft dodging stories? He also claimed he was attending college and got a year deferment. He then claims he felt guilty for not serving in Viet Nam and made USO trips to Iraq and Afghanistan. Yeah, that makes up for it. Bill Clinton made up for it by being President Of The United States for 8 years and our economy was great, so you going to play a few shows for the REAL Patriots is not really making up for it. In the mean time, your buddy “W” has dug us into a ravine called recession.
