Check Out ‘The Councilmen And Their Video "Boxcar Sermon"
March 9, 2009 by Scott
Check out The Councilmen and their new video for Boxcar Sermon. Boxcar Sermon premiered exclusively on LP33 TV today. It has a cool, almost Johnny Cash rock/country feel to it, with the exception of the vocals that is. It’s something different from your typical fabricated rock band of today, and that’s a great thing.
The Councilmen are a 4 piece band out of Bakersfield, California. Here is a press release on the band.
The Councilmen are Keaton York, 24 (guitar/lead vox), Julian Sanchez, 21 (bass/vox), Taylor Haley, 21 (drums) Kyle Appleton (lead guitar/producer). The band formed the summer of 2007, having grown up together in Bakersfield as friends and fellow musicians. The Councilmen being their second collaboration, their first attempt happened during high school.
The band influences range from their personal tastes to an amalgamation of local country roots and universal industry greats such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Crosby Stills and Nash, etc… The bands focus was to take the energy of progressive rock and power bands and meld it with the attitude of early 60’s & 70’s rock before the Monterey festival and iron fisted take over of corporate America that fashioned “the music industry”. The largest part of the band is their live shows.

It’s got a Johnny Cash feel for sure- but the vocals are completely different than Cash’s. York is more of a crooner filled with emotional angst. The contrast of the melancholy vocals and the upbeat tempo give the song a lot of texture. With regards to the video, the expressionless delivery became a bit monotone, so it was nice to see Haley the drummer crack a smile. I understand the solemnity, however, to me, the title conjures up an image of a down and out firebrand preacher giving it to his fellow homeless hobo travelers. I would have liked to seen a little more expression like in one of the earlier cuts where York starts the verse with a little sneer that would have made Elvis proud.
Wowzers! This song is AMAZING! So what if I’ve heard it 80,000x, I could hear it 80,ooox more! It’s beautiful! I like the live performance scenes best. They look most natural, ‘cuz the Councilmen rock at LIVE performances!
Best band EVER! I’ll always be a fan!
They are amazing at the country rock like Boxcar Sermon
