Daily Dose 6/7 Johnny Cash – Hurt
June 7, 2008 by Scott
“What have I become, my sweetest friend?
Everyone I know goes away in the end
But you can have it all, my empire of dirt
I will let you down. I will make hurt.”
Johnny Cash was a great artist. He covered many great songs and put his own twist into songs done by Rock artists such as U2, Beck, Tom Petty, Danzig, Depeche Mode and here, Nine Inch Nails.
Reznor was flattered when asked if Cash could use this song and was also a bit hesitant. He didn’t want it to be gimmicky. After viewing the video, this is what he said:
“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.”

yeah, this has definitely been my favorite cover for a while now. I dont care for the original as much.
I like Johnny’s version better as well.
