Nikki Sixx: Wins My "Jerk Off Of The Year" Award
September 13, 2008 by Scott
You know how a lot of things are Labeled “Rock” these days? A lot of people don’t like it. Sure, I’m one of those people. Some things that are not rock or metal are labeled as such and it tends to piss people off. However there are some things that can be left alone. I don’t like Disney’s The Jonas Brothers or Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus. Earsucker recently posted a quote from Sixx as he proclaimed that some things that are Labeled as rock are not rock and shouldn’t be. This kind of aggravated me to en extent. I’ll explain after the quote from IHeartMusic.com:
Sixx rages, “There’s a lot of s**t out there where people are calling it rock. I went into Barnes & Noble the other day, and there’s a huge display that says ‘rock ‘n’ roll,’ and it had a big thing of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.
“I went, ‘What the f**k is this?’ People are believing that s**t that is not rock ‘n’ roll (and) is not the rock lifestyle is rock!”
Now perhaps in the world of adult rock and roll, no, these are not Rock And Roll. This is Disney shit and it’s targeted at kids. It’s Rock And Roll for kids. My 10 year old son listens to some rock and metal and there is some bands I have introduced him to and there is other music of mine that he is not mature enough to listen to yet. Sometimes he watches the Disney Channel and between shows they show The Jonas Brothers and The Cheetah Girls and all that. I don’t tell him that it’s not rock and I don’t discourage him from listening to it. He will grow out of it. It’s kids rock and let kids be kids. I certainly rather have my young children listening to the Jonas Brothers than Motley Crue lyrics talking about doing blow and screwing strippers. Another analogy is this: Would you take a Sponge Bob Square-pants dvd away from your kid and hand them a skin-flick and tell them “That’s not a real movie, this is!” NO! you let kids be kids and if that is what they call rock and roll at their age then let it be and shut up. Besides, if your shopping for good rock CD’s at Barnes & Noble you’re in the wrong store in the first place, Jerk-off. I get pissed when I find Motley Crue’s The Saints Of Los Angeles in the metal section of a record store when it should clearly be…in the trash!

Rock Star Egos.
Now I gotta ask…so, what IS rock and roll according to Mr. Sixx? Is it Buddy Holly? Is it Huey Lewis and the News? Is it Van Halen? Is it Motley Crue?
Rock and Roll is what the industry tells us it is at any given time. Each of those artists above fell into the Rock and Roll category, but their music is all very, very different.
Rock Star Egos…
The mentioned “Rock” in the post is children’s rock, plain and simple. It’s marketed towards children and it’s clean music. It’s not as if you would walk in to a record store and ask the help what they would suggest in the rock section and they would pull out a Hanna Montana CD.
Everyone that is a fan of rock and roll knows what rock is and knows the difference between what the industry is pushing and what fits in the rock category. Pop/rock is normally jumbled all into section anyway. Borders pretty much lumps rock, pop and metal all into one section. I imagine Barnes & Noble is pretty much the same way.
Well… I gotta tell ya… I kind of agree with Sixx. Jonas Bros/Hannah Montana is in no way shape or form rock. Not for kids or anyone else. There are some rock bands of the day… they aren’t in that group. They are pop- plain and simple. As for Sixx going into Barnes and Noble looking for Rock- I hardly think so. He was probably just there and saw a display. That’s all.
You are stupid, saints of los Angelos rocks, and I listen to it, I have since I was three days old!!! My parents hates the jonas brothers, and they like them too. He has a point, if you do listen to them, atleast admit that they are pop, not Rock!!!! Why are you even talking about it if the suposadly suck. I am now twelve and grew up with the crue, and Nikki Sixx, you have a problam if you say that saints suck. It may not be as good as other cds they made, but it is still better than what you listen too.
“You are stupid, saints of los Angelos rocks, and I listen to it, I have since I was three days old!!!”
You’ve been listening to S.O.L.A. since you were three days old? It just came out this year. Who’s stupid now? Obviously you haven’t a clue yet so I’ll give you a few years before I argue with a twelve year old about music.
Frank Ferrana proves yet again that he has the maturity of a dung beetle. Why even make a shallow comment like that? Esp. when you’re a father? Grow up, you pitiful fool. Or go die already.
Wow…Did he say “I heard a 4 year old saying The Jo Bros are rock and I went, ‘What the fuck is this?’ and gave him my CD”?
NO! If theres a display in Barnes and Noble that is saying the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus are rock…than he has a right to his opinion.
Unless a 4 year old put up the display…which I highly doubt.
And did you ever think he was in BnR looking for…hmmm…I dont know…A BOOK?!
“I get pissed when I find Motley Crue’s The Saints Of Los Angeles in the metal section of a record store when it should clearly be…in the trash!”
And my “Hypocrite of the Year” award goes to…
Why dont you try blogging about things that dont make you look like a complete tool.
I AGREE WITH NIKKI EVERYONE THINKS THAT ROCK N ROLL IS THE JONAS BROTHERS OR HANNAH MONTANA I THINK THAT THEY ARE WRONG ROCK N ROLL IS DEFINED AS A LOUD DRUM THAT BACKS EVERYTHING UP AND ISNT A BUNCH OF FAGS LIKE THE JONAS BROTHERS SINGING AND SCREECHING INTO THE MICROPHONE. ROCK N ROLL HAS A MEANING TO MUSIC IT SHOWS THE DIFFERENT SIDES TO THE ARTIST AND IT SHOWS THE FEELING OF LETTING EVERYTHING COME OUT AT THEIR CONCERTS, I AGREE WITH NIKKI AND I AGREE MORE SINCE I HAVE MET AND TALKED TO HIM MANY TIMES I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HIM AND I THINK YOU GUYS TOTALLY NEED TO CALM DOWN MY 4 YR OLD BROTHER ISNT EVEN ALLOWED TO WATCH HANNAH MONTANA AND THE JONAS BROTHERS WHEN THEY COME ON BECAUSE IT IS JUST JUNK AND IM NOT SAYING HE CAN LISTEN TO THE MOTLEY CRUE AND GUNS AND ROSES AND KISS AND ETC BUT I THINK THAT HE CAN TELL WHAT IS GOOD AND BAD WHEN HE HANGS WITH ME…. AND HE TOTALLY DIGS NIKKI’S MUSIC AS WELL SO I THINK YOU SHOULD JUST COOL DOWN AND SHOULD SEE THAT NIKKI IS TOTALLY RIGHT AND WHO KNOWS THAT HE WAS LOOKING FOR MUSIC THERE MAYBE IT WAS A BOOK…..HE STATED “I SAW A POSTER”
I agree with Nikki on this fully. I’ve never met him or any of that but would feel honored to. But the only thing I’d add to his comment is that in my opinion the only reason its under Rock is to sale CD’s etc. Put it under Kids Rock and see how many 10-14 year olds buy that crap. At least Put it under Pop or something else. Its all about marketing and will always be as long as there is money.
…in the trash. That was funny. I don’t think Miley and the Jonas dudes are Rock and Roll…Pop maybe but def not Rock…:)
i was no older than 5 when i first heard the dr feelgood album, n i loved it, just cuz u listen to crue (or anyother band of that nature) when your young, doesnt mean ur gonna grow up to be a perverted drug addict, but when u let ur kids watch sponge bob n listen to that shitty disney music, their chances of growing up gay is much higher
Let me begin by saying that your grammar is atrocious. Anyway…
Your Spongebob comparison is bogus. He didn’t say children shouldn’t be exposed to the Jonas Brothers. Nikki Sixx has lived his life for his view of Rock and Roll – whether it is your vision or not.
The Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana are Pop. Let’s not quibble over their talent – bottom line is, they’re pop. The frustration that Sixx, as well as many Rock and Roll fans, must feel is that they are disgracing the genre Rock and Roll to sell CD’s. The Jonas Brothers play guitar, so Disney calls them rock. If Disney labeled them as Pop, they would be a “boy band” and boy bands died in the 90’s.
Boy bands will not make it today. Therefore, the Jonas Brothers are Rock.
Regardless of whether you like Nikki Sixx’s music or not, he clearly writes Rock and Roll. That is indisputable. It’s understandable that Sixx feels that the Rock and Roll genre has been disgraced by these pop stars simply to make money for a billion dollar corporation.
