There Is Just Something About Vinyl

June 13, 2008 by Scott

vinyl 014 What the hell is it that has made vinyl stand the test of time. All other media with the exception of the compact disc and now mp3s has come on gone but there is still a demand for vinyl. Now it may not be such a demand as every band is printing albums on vinyl but a few here and there know their fans well enough that if they do take the time and money to get vinyl albums made, the fans will buy them.

For instance, Metallica. Metallica has just started reissuing their back catalogue. I bought the first two today. Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning today. I talk a lot of trash about Metallica but you can’t deny that their first 4 albums were legendary with the Black Album, although being a left turn for the band was still a great album (You might as well admit it).

IN the past history of music media a lot of things have come and gone. 8 Tracks, cassette tapes, mini discs, but still vinyl stands true and is always on demand for collectors. I don’t know how many actually have records players that they still use but I can tell you that I know most just buy them as a collection piece. The chances of me buying a record player just to listen to the small collection I have is pretty nil. The above picture is just some of the metal vinyl I have. I have a few other rock and classic rock albums on vinyl but they are in a box in a closet. It’s amazing as big as a vinyl record is, that it can still be popular. In an age that wants every thing compact a piece of plastic and cardboard 12X12X1/8th inch can still be popular. I don’t know if it just takes the person back to the times or if it is because it’s big. I like it for that reason and because it’s a cool collection piece. It’s big, it’s there and in your hands…it’s just cool.

Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how big? and what’s your prize vinyl piece? if you like, take a picture send it to TheRockDose@gmail.com and I’ll do a readers vinyl collection post when I get enough to show!

There IS something about vinyl and as a computer AND music geek i know what it is. A CD or MP3 may take up less space and contain the same auditory experience, but a vinyl record, by nature, is a physical manifestation of the sound itself rather than an encoding or representation of it.

i agree, even when encoded audio has better quality most times, is digital and digital it’s not a real sound ’cause vinyl records can capture sounds the digital devices can’t, so yeah vinyl is A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE SOUND. And I’m a computer and music geek(or whatever), but i like vinyl records i guess ’cause they some kind of ART.

there you go. Art. It’s kind of like having a digital picture of something on your computer but actually having it to hold and examine as your own that makes it what it is…
